Red noses signify much more than Rudolph

The red nose is becoming known for more than just Rudolph.

The international fundraising campaign Red Nose Day is a program by the nonprofit Comic Relief, Inc. It aims to combine laughter and charity to benefit kids in poverty.

Some of the charities that benefit from the fund include the Boys and Girls Club of America, Children’s Health Fund, Feeding America, Save the Children, United Way and others.

Founded in Britain where it has raised more than $1 billion, Red Nose Day attracted a lot of attention in its first year in the U.S.

Celebrities and corporate sponsors have promoted the event by wearing red noses or using them in various advertisements.

In Marquette on Thursday, students at Sandy Knoll Elementary School got involved with the event by making an impact locally through a food drive for a new weekend food pack program, called JJ Packs, which is serving Marquette Area Public Schools elementary students.

Nonperishable food items were donated by students and families and overflowed from the more than 10 boxes that were outside the front office of Sandy Knoll.

The students at Sandy Knoll capitalized on the fervor of Red Nose Day to significantly impact the JJ Packs program, which will benefit a significant number of children in the Marquette Area Public Schools.

We like community benefit efforts like these, especially ones that get kids involved, providing an early opportunity to learn valuable lessons

We hope the generosity can continue through the other 364 days of the year.
