Voices for Youth quietly doing great work in area

It’s hard to overestimate the value of programs, no matter what their origin, that are designed to help children and young people in crisis.

Those people, after all, are society’s future, here and elsewhere. That’s why we like a longstanding initiative operated by Lutheran Social Services of Wisconsin and Upper Michigan.

Voices For Youth has been quietly helping save lives and secure futures for the past two decades or so. In the U.P., the program is located in Marquette, Alger, Delta, Dickinson and Iron counties.

It is focused on helping young people ages 10 to 21 who are homeless or about to be. There is no cost to the participants and assistance is available 24 hours per day, 7 days per week.

Program information, and details from several people it helped, were profiled in Sunday’s Mining Journal. In Marquette, the VFY home is located at 1024 N. Fourth St.

With about a 12 percent homeless rate in this area, there is a need. A wide variety of programming is available including transitional living, supportive housing, instruction in various life skills, apprenticeships and more.

Additionally, different types of parenting training is available.
