Transplant seminar to provide wide range of information

An event scheduled for Wednesday night this week promises to inform people about one of the most important yet least understood medical procedures available: organ transplant.

And as an additional bonus, the person who has done the lion’s share of work organizing the event is someone who can speak to the importance of the procedure first hand.

Doug Knauer’s wife, Claire, is a liver transplant recipient. The Northern Center for Lifelong Learning also played an important role in organizing “The Transplant Experience.”

“The seminar origin began with the concept that the total story should be told about organ transplants from the donor and the donor families to the national selection process that governs the ranking of transplant recipient … to the emotional rollercoaster involved with being on the waitlist to receive an organ to the surgery involved in making the transplanted organ a viable part of the recipients physiology to the recovery process and successful extension of life,” Knauer told Mining Journal Staff Writer Renee Prusi for a front page story Monday. “I thought I could pull this together with some help, but the (University of Wisconsin) Hospital transplant program really stepped in and have made this a tremendous program.”

Prusi wrote the evening will be a “walk” through an actual transplant case that happened in Marquette. Presenters will include a panel of staff and surgeons from Marquette General Hospital, the University of Wisconsin Organ and Tissue Donation program, and the UW Transplant program.

The seminar will take place from 7-9 p.m. Wednesday in Jamrich Auditorium at Northern Michigan University.

If you or someone you love may have a transplant at some point in time, or if you’re simply interested in getting educated on an immensely important topic, this seminar might be something you consider.
