Landmark Inn must stay a gem despite new ownership

At first thought, the words “Landmark Inn to be sold” could instill thoughts of sadness. The building, a longtime fixture in the downtown area along Front Street, has provided a temporary stay in Marquette for many notable people throughout the years: Amelia Earhart, the comedy duo Abbott and Costello, and the folk group Peter, Paul and Mary, to name just a few.

It’s given residents and tourists a chance to sit down for a casual meal at the hotel’s Northland Pub, a fancier meal at Capers Restaurant or the choice of either at the North Star Lounge.

People staying overnight at the Landmark have one-of-a-kind, cozy accommodations in which to spend their time in the area.

Many charitable events also have taken place at the Landmark Inn, including its Harbor Room.

And anyone simply walking through the lobby can get a sense of the early 20th century with its antique feel.

Owner Christine Pesola recently announced the pending sale of the Landmark Inn to the Minneapolis-based Graves Hospitality Corp.

The business has a good track record in the hospitality arena, so Pesola has expressed the belief the Landmark will be in good hands.

It might take a few months for the transition to take place, and even longer to see what plans Graves has for the Landmark.

Time will tell how those plans play out, but it is our sincere hope – and belief – the Landmark Inn will be a local gem for years to come. The community has come to respect and cherish the Landmark and wants it to continue to be an important part of the Marquette area.
