Events of 9/11 should never be forgotten

Today marks the 13th anniversary of the terrorist attacks on the United States, and a number of events are scheduled in many of the usual places to mark the occasion.

Commemorations are planned at the site of the former Twin Towers of the World Trade in New York City, where American Airlines Flight 11 and United Airlines Flight 175 were flown into the towers. Both collapsed, killing scores.

In addition, a ceremony is planned at the Pentagon in Washington, D.C., where terrorists crashed American Airlines Flight 77. Finally, a ceremony is planned for a location near Shanksville, Pennsylvania. That’s where United Airlines Flight 93 crashed, apparently after its passengers battled the terrorists who had highjacked it for control of the airplane.

All told, nearly 3,000 innocent people died that day, a turning point in this nation’s history that cannot, and should not be underestimated.

Some 343 firefighters and 72 law enforcement officers perished.

We invite readers to never forget the events of that day. U.S. foreign policy then and now is what it is because of it.

Put another way, the terrorist attacks on Sept. 11, 2011 changed everything, and probably changed it forever.
