Another successful Upper Peninsula Honor Flight has been completed.

The flight took 78 veterans of World War II and the Korean War to Washington, D.C., to visit the monuments in their honor along with other landmarks.

This was the first flight that had its majority from the Korean War set.

The veterans were greeted as heroes at every stopping point throughout the day Wednesday. From the Gladstone High School Band at the takeoff event early in the morning to the Marine Corps Brass Quintet that played at Reagan National Airport, the vets received musical salutes.

But even more, they were cheered. American flags were waved in salute and person after person greeted these wonderful men and women with warm handshakes. It was a day to remember for a generation disappearing much too quickly.

The trip was capped by a tremendous welcome home event at the Delta County Airport Wednesday night. Hundreds of people carried patriotic signs, waved the red, white and blue and cheered loudly to make a fantastic day even more special.

This was the sixth mission of U.P. Honor Flight. Nearly 500 veterans have been taken to the nation’s capital at no cost to them.

How marvelous.

Another mission has been scheduled for Sept. 4 and we hope the public steps up to help again.

A simple and delicious way to do that is to participate in Culver’s Day of Giving, which is set for Tuesday at the chain’s Marquette and Escanaba locations.

It’s an easy chance to support UPHF as 10 percent of sales that day will be donated to this program which honors real American heroes.
