Today marks a very important anniversary in the history of technology: Mark Zuckerberg 10 years ago on this date founded Facebook and changed the lives of millions forever.

It’s hard for anyone to deny the social impact Facebook has had on its more than 1.3 billion users worldwide. Since the introduction of the computer-based program and its integration into the world of smartphones, Facebook has become a household staple of daily life.

The program has made it easier to stay connected in ways that were never possible before Zuckerberg thought up Facebook in his dorm room. Peope can interact through the digital world with friends, family, business connections and are also able to get news updates from local, regional and even worldwide agencies.

While it’s a great tool for connecting people, it also helps businesses interact with customers. When consumers follow a local business that business gets the chance to spider-web through posts and photos, and it’s almost like free advertising.

The company – which has reached a market value of almost $150 billion – has been a pioneer for other popular and widely used apps like Snapchat, Linkedin, Instagram and Twitter, all of which have transitioned society deeper into the digital age.

People, businesses and organizations around the world provide an endless stream of selfies, posts, rants, photos and videos, and it’s easier than ever to be in the know. Families separated by long distances are brought closer through photos and videos, grandparents get to see their grandkids and kids can keep their parents in the loop.

And outside of the hard news links, Facebook is also a source of endless entertainment. With quotes of Internet wisdom, games, surveys and a never-ending supply of always entertaining videos of cats and kids, there’s never a dull moment.

While, overall, Facebook has brought people together, it has only done so via the digital world. Seeing a picture or video of a grandchild isn’t the same as a person to person visit, so that leaves a little something lacking. Messaging someone isn’t as fulfilling as having a conversation face to face over a cup of coffee.

That being said, without Facebook, a lot of people wouldn’t have the chance to keep in touch with family and friends.
