MUNISING, MI – Diane Kimar-Luman, a dedicated wife, mother, and educator, passed away unexpectedly on October 15, 2026.
Diane was born on November 16, 1969 in Munising, Michigan to David and Christine Kimar. She was a 1987 graduate of Munising High School. She continued her education at Northern Michigan University and Central Michigan University, earning her Master Degree in Education. As a devoted third grade teacher, Diane taught in Greenville Public Schools for 30 years at Cedar Crest Elementary School, a place that became home with coworkers who became family. Diane also enjoyed working at St. Julian Winery and DK Security. She took pride in being a hard worker, which was an important part of her Finnish heritage/SISU.
Diane married the love of her life, Wayne Luman, at the Brownstone Inn. Together, they enjoyed traveling, beekeeping, line dancing, crafting, and spending time with their first grandchild who loved being in Diane's arms.
Diane found peace in nature. She cherished her childhood home in the Upper Peninsula and enjoyed walking the shores of Lake Superior, collecting rocks, beach glass, and driftwood for her many creative endeavors. She encouraged this creativity in others by making crafts with so many people she loved, including her students and niece.
As her son Cody stated, "it is impossible to describe in words who my Mom was to the world." A number of her friends shared powerful sentiments about her: Diane was strong, wise, witty, and kind. She met every challenge with determination, humor, and a positive attitude and persevered with grace, joy, and love. Diane had a way of making people feel loved, even through the smallest of gestures. She made people feel like they mattered and always put others before herself. She had a special connection with children, which made her an exceptional teacher. Time with family and friends was what Diane treasured most. She advocated for her sons, encouraging and supporting Michael's passion for fishing and Cody's college education.
Diane is survived by her husband, Wayne; sons Michael Hansen, Cody (Marjorie) Hansen, and Alexander (Avery) Luman; mother Christine Kimar; sisters Anne (Ric) O'Neill, Catherine Kimar, and Sarah Kimar; nephews and niece, David O'Neill, Joy O'Neill, and Adam Trefzer; and her beautiful new grandson, August. She was close with all of her family and is also survived by her aunts, Barbara (Joe) Hase, Debra (Will) Oas, and Julie (Mike) Aitken, along with her sister cousin Carrie Allie, and numerous other cousins whom she loved deeply. Additionally, she is survived by many dear friends who she considered family.
She was preceded in death by her father, David Kimar, and brother, Thomas Trefzer, both of whom shared her beautiful blue eyes.
While recently grieving the loss of her brother and cousin, Diane said, "The world is still beautiful and the sun still rises. Love your people well. We are not promised tomorrow." She was a light whose smile brightened up a room; she shared her sunshine with not only her family and friends, but oodles of young students and even strangers. As one of her friends stated, "Some people leave a mark on your heart that will never fade."
Services will also be held at the Bowerman Funeral Home, 302 E. Superior Street, Munising, MI 49862 on Sunday, November 1, 2026. Visiting time with family and friends will be from 10:30 a.m. until 12:00 p.m. A time of sharing of remembrances and memories will begin at noon. Interment will be at the Serenity Pines Cemetery in AuTrain following the service.
