MARQUETTE, MI – Susan Mary “Sue” Blomgren, aged 88, Marquette, passed peacefully on September 10, 2026 at her home with her children at her side. At the time she passed, she was a patient
of U.P. Home Health and Hospice, who provided amazing care.
Susan was born April 10, 1938, at her parents’ home in North Lake, MI. She spent her early years in North Lake. Susan attended Catholic school in her early years, then graduated with the class of 1956 from Ishpeming High School, with a focus in science. She was a member of the Glee Club, Mixed Chorus, Hoop Girls, and Student Council among other school clubs and activities. She went on to earn a bachelor's degree Magna cum Laude from Northern Michigan University, majoring in English and minoring in French.
On June 13, 1959, she married Paul Gerald Blomgren of Ishpeming, then employed with Cleveland Cliffs Steel, and honeymooned aboard an iron ore freighter in Cleveland Harbor during the Steel Strike of 1959.
Susan was employed as a high school French teacher in Gwinn for two years. Susan and Paul then moved to Ann Arbor to start a family, as Paul worked to complete a master’s degree at the University of Michigan. They spent most of their downstate lives in Davisburg before returning to the U.P. upon Paul's retirement. During this time, Susan was active with the Vasa Lodge and wrote short stories for the Friends of the Library Newsletter. Susan was a member of the Roman Catholic Church throughout her life. She greatly enjoyed seeing her high school graduating class at the reunions and celebrated her 70th class reunion this summer with her classmates from Ishpeming High. She had many lifelong friends she enjoyed and kept in contact with.
Susan had many interests she was passionate about including cooking, music, reading, French and Swedish culture, writing, travel and causes for animal and wildlife welfare, including a lifelong interest in the preservation of wolves. She was constantly amazed by our planet Earth and the universe beyond. She was very much enjoying the discoveries that NASA and the Hubble telescope provided. Susan was an avid follower of world news and believed that staying informed was of utmost importance. She also believed strongly in the power of reading, and enjoyed children's books as well as novels, biographies and the classics. Susan greatly enjoyed frequent visits to the Marquette and Ishpeming libraries. She loved Red Wings Hockey and enjoyed watching with her son, Tom. She also greatly enjoyed time at her camp, and taking scenic rides locally.
Susan is survived by her three children, Brigitte Stark, Erik Blomgren and Thomas Blomgren; grandchildren, Annika Stark, Robert Rowley, Sean Blomgren and Ashley Shea; great-grandchildren, Oaklyn Blomgren, Neveah Jackson, and Lincoln Plante; nieces and nephews, Mary Baggiore and John Baggiore, Michael, David and Samuel Sarasin, Susan Reidy and Chantelle Beckman.
Susan was preceded in death by her mother and father, Hazel and William Bussiere; her husband, Paul Blomgren; her sister, Carol Valenti; and her granddaughter, Annie Blomgren.
Susan requested that no formal service be held, but rather her ashes be simply returned to the earth in some of her favorite places.
