GRAND HAVEN, MI Joanne Marie Kingston, age 90, passed away at Lakeshore Assisted Living in Grand Haven, MI on Monday, September 14, 2026.
Joanne was born in Mountain Lake, MN to Amund and Elsie (Hahn) Sandbo on October 12, 1935. After her father's death just before she was born, Elsie, Joanne, and her two sisters moved to Ormsby, MN to be closer to family. Joanne graduated from University of Minnesota with a degree in business education. She took a teaching job in Durham, NH where she met her husband David on a ski trip. After marriage, they moved to Arizona where their son John was born and then to Texas where their daughter Margaret was born. The family settled in Marquette, MI where they lived for 44 years. Joanne and David recently celebrated 63 years of marriage.
Joanne was a dedicated volunteer. She volunteered in all her children's endeavors, A Room at the Inn which is an unhoused program in Marquette, MI and Blessings in a Backpack in Tucson, AZ which provided weekend food for children in need. Joanne enjoyed downhill and cross-country skiing, camping, travel and wintering in Tucson, AZ. She was always an active member in her churches; Messiah Lutheran Church in Marquette, New Spirit Lutheran Church in Tucson, AZ, and Edgewood Lutheran Church in Fruitport.
Joanne was preceded in death by her parents and her sister Arlene Nordby. She is survived by her husband David Kingston, sister Mary Lee Sybrant, son John (Kimberly) Kingston, daughter Margaret (Patrick) Staskiewicz, grandchildren Caleb, Luke (Lillie) and Isabel Staskiewicz and Jack Kingston.
A Funeral Service will be held at 11:00 AM Saturday, September 26, 2026 with visitation one hour prior at Edgewood Lutheran Church, 2525 E. Pontaluna Road, Fruitport, MI
49415. A luncheon will be served following the service. Donations can be made to Edgewood Lutheran Church or Trinity Health at Home Hospice Grand Haven.
Our hearts are full knowing Joanne is having a wonderful reunion in heaven with her father Armund who she never met.
