GRAND RAPIDS, MI – Alex James Williamson, 37, of Grand Rapids, Michigan, passed away unexpectedly on September 23, 2025.
Alex was born on June 21, 1988, in Marquette, Michigan, to Lori and Donald Williamson. He graduated from Marquette Senior High School in 2007 and continued his education at Northern Michigan University, graduating with honors in 2016 with an Associate Degree in Applied Sciences in Culinary Arts and Hospitality Management.
Food was one of Alex's greatest passions, and that love began when he was only four years old. For Alex, cooking was about much more than preparing a meal, it was a way to care for people and bring them together. He especially loved making homemade pasta and hosting seafood boils for family and friends.
Alex also had a lifelong fascination with reptiles and bugs. As a child, he was known to tuck his latest discovery into his pocket and bring it home in hopes of keeping it as a pet. Especially his yellow lab Barrett, she was the light of Alex's life and his devoted companion.
Alex was preceded in death by his beloved mother, Lori Fitzhugh; his father, Donald Williamson; his brother, Andrew Fitzhugh; and his grandparents, Ralph and Natalie Shiffman and Robert Wilson.
He leaves behind his beloved Barezy Bear (Barrett), now reunited with him again; his dad, Dale Fitzhugh; his siblings, Ian (Katherine) Williamson, Kristen Williamson, Kate Williamson, Michael (April) Fitzhugh, and Cassandra Bera; his niece, Natalie Carter; and his nephews, Jacob Williamson and Owen Carter. He is also survived by important mother and father figures in his life, Lisa and Travis Bera; his grandmother, Joan Wilson; and many aunts, uncles, cousins, and friends.
A memorial service will be held on September 19, 2026, in Marquette MI. Anyone wanting to attend is welcome, contact the family for details.
In honor of Alex's lifelong love and compassion for animals, memorial donations may be made to the Marquette County Humane Society.
