MARQUETTE, MI – Paul Michael Matthews, 82, of Marquette, passed away peacefully Wednesday, August 5, 2026 at UPHS-Marquette.
Paul was born May 1, 1944 in Ishpeming to Harold and Martha (Halkola) Matthews and was a proud graduate of Negaunee High School, Class of 1962. Following graduation, he attended Michigan Technological University and earned his Bachelor's Degree in Mechanical Engineering.
Following graduation, Paul began his career at Honeywell in Minnesota before returning to Negaunee to take care of his mother. Paul was then united in marriage to Beatrice 'Bea' Lahtinen on June 25, 1988. He was a proud co-owner/operator of Mattson Arctic Cat/Suzuki in Negaunee Township, retiring after 20 plus years of service.
Paul was an avid hunter, and loved spending time at camp. He took trips to Canada with his brother-in-law to hunt Caribou and Moose. He was a devoted husband and caretaker for his beloved wife, and enjoyed a game of Yahtzee. Above all, Paul loved spending time with his son Jim and his beloved grandchildren.
Paul is survived by his son, Jim (Ellen) Lahtinen of Georgia; one grandson, Patrick Lahtinen of Florida; and numerous great-grandchildren; two sisters-in-law: Sue Matthews, and Germaine Matthews; and four nieces and nephews: Cathy, Jon, Melody, and David.
Paul was preceded in death by his parents; his beloved wife 'Bea' Matthews on May 4, 2026; and two brothers: Harold and David Matthews.
Honoring his wishes, no public services will be held. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be directed to Bethany Lutheran Church in Paul's memory, 550 Cherry St, Negaunee, MI 49866.
