Michael L. Barry

MARQUETTE, MI- Michael L. Barry, 78, of Marquette, passed away on August 24, 2026, at U.P. Health System­ Marquette.

Michael was born on March 23, 1948, in Marquette to Harris M. and Ilona R. Maki. He was a graduate of Marquette Senior High School.

Following high school, Mike enlisted in the U.S. Navy, where he served from 1966 until his honorable discharge in 1970. He was very proud of his military service and the time he spent serving his country.

In 1968, Mike married Ardith “Ardie” Winslow in Marquette.

Mike worked at various places throughout his career, including Larson and Krieg Wholesale, Credit Check, UP Medical Management, and the Ojibwa Casino.

In his younger years, Mike enjoyed playing softball and later spent many years as an umpire. He was an avid sports fan, especially of the Detroit Lions, Detroit Tigers, University of Michigan, Marquette Senior High School, and Northern Michigan University. Mike also enjoyed reading, with a particular interest in history and learning about the past.

Mike was a member of American Legion Post 44 and the Exchange Club.

Mike is survived by his wife, Ardie Barry of Marquette; his children, Michael (Michelle) Barry of Marquette and Lisa (Andrew) Virsik of Lowell, MI; grandchildren, Rachel and Jessica Barry of Marquette, Joshua (Emma) Virsik of Byron Center, MI, and Ryan Virsik of Lowell; brother, Dave (Diane) Barry of Plymouth, MI; brother-in-law, David (Linda) Winslow; sisters-in-law, Lee Ann (Terry) Steinhoff and Carol (Mark) Maloney; as well as many nieces, nephews, friends, and daycare kids who held a special place in his heart.

Mike was preceded in death by his parents, Harris and Ilona Barry; sisters, Barbara Jean Barry and Arleen Clarke; and nephews, Aaron Winslow and Daniel Maloney.

A celebration of Mike’s life will be held at a later date and will be announced.

The family wishes to extend their heartfelt gratitude to U.P. Health System-Marquette and especially to Dr. Riley Torreano, for their exceptional care and compassion during Mike’s final days.
