Fred E. Smith

RAPID RIVER, MI – Fred E. Smith, 85, of Rapid River, passed away surrounded by family on Thursday, August 13, 2026 at OSF St. Francis Hospital.

Fred was born on May 3, 1941 in Holland, MI, son to Clarence Gordon and Velma Hilma (Laakso) Smith. He was raised in Eben Junction, MI, where he attended Rock River Township High School, graduating in 1959, and then proudly served in the U.S. Army. Fred spent the majority of his life in and around the Negaunee area, and moved to Rapid River in his later retirement years. He spent his career in mining as a blaster at the Empire Iron Mine near Negaunee for 30 years before retiring in 2000.

Fred was an active member of the Fraternal Order of the Eagles Aerie 1944 in Negaunee. He honorably served many roles including Grand Worthy International President from 2002-2003 traveling all 50 states and beyond. During Fred's retirement, he traveled extensively and enjoyed a number of hobbies. He was an avid fisherman and hunter. He also was a member of the Gladstone Golf Club, in addition to multiple golf and bowling leagues.

Fred is survived by his loving companion of 25 years, Glenda Giffey of Rapid River; children, Jason (Brooke Poquette) Smith of Marinette, WI, Amber (Joshua) Herman of Granger, IN, and Steven (Katlyn) Smith of Brighton, MI; grandchildren, Molly, Maggie, Bryce, Cayden, Jaxon, Wyatt, and Emerson; siblings, Janet Poetz, Jim (Joyce) Smith, and Stan (Andrea) Smith; and many nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, Fred is preceded in death by his brothers, Kenneth Smith and Donald Smith; and grandson, Rory.

A celebration of life will be held on Sunday, August 30th, 2026 at the Negaunee Eagles Club, 311 Iron St., Negaunee, MI from 1-4 PM.
