James “Kinky” McCarthy

CHARLOTTE, MI – James “Kinky” McCarthy of Charlotte, MI, passed away at U of M Sparrow Hospital, Lansing, MI., on June 21, 2026.

He was born in Ishpeming, August 15, 1941, to John and Mary (Makela) McCarthy, attended and graduated from National Mine High School, class of 1959.

Proudly served in the U.S. Navy, aboard the USS Hornet. Upon discharge he became a journeyman machinist, working in Ypsilanti, MI. Where he met, and married, Patricia Ryan on March 25, 1972. He worked at the Tilden Mine, before working for, and retiring from, the Kellogg Co.

Kinky was predeceased by his parents and wife Patricia.

He is survived by his son, Shawn, Battle Creek, MI, sister Kathleen (Reuben) Kjellman, Loudon, TN, niece Vicki Maison, Knoxville, TN and relatives-in-law in SD and IO.

Cremains were interred beside Patricia at Maple Hill Cemetery in Charlotte, MI. Pray Funeral Home (www.prayfuneral.com) assisted the family.
