Lauri Elizabeth Davis

GWINN, MI – Lauri Elizabeth Davis, age 61, of Gwinn, passed away peacefully at home on June 10, 2026, under the loving care of her family and caregivers at Lake Superior Life Care and Hospice.

Lauri was born on March 9, 1965, in Poughkeepsie, New York, the daughter of Richard and Mary (Donaldson) Mackelburg. She graduated from William Tennent High School in Warminster, Pennsylvania, with the Class of 1983.

Dedicated to lifelong learning, Lauri pursued an extensive academic career. She earned her bachelor’s degree from Shippensburg University and later received a master’s degree while living in Washington State. She continued her education at Eastern Michigan University, where she obtained her teaching credentials, and then attended Western Michigan University, earning a second master’s degree in philosophy and a Ph.D. in Science Education.

Throughout her early adult years, Lauri lived in several locations across the country and participated in numerous environmental projects, reflecting her passion for science and the natural world.

On May 1, 1998, she married the love of her life, Michael Davis. The couple made their home in Houghton, where Lauri taught high school science, before relocating to lower Michigan. Six years ago, they settled in Gwinn.

For much of her professional life, Lauri served as an instructor for Western Michigan University, teaching online courses that prepared future elementary school teachers. She was deeply committed to education and genuinely cared for her students. Many former students have shared how her encouragement and dedication inspired them to continue their education and pursue their goals.

Lauri enjoyed reading, crocheting, and spending time outdoors. She especially loved cross-country skiing, kayaking, and exploring nature. She will be remembered for her intelligence, determination, compassion, and unwavering commitment to helping others succeed.

She is survived by her husband, Michael Davis; her siblings, Kurt, Susan, and Karen; and her beloved nieces and nephews, whom she cherished greatly.

Lauri was preceded in death by her parents, Richard and Mary Mackelburg.

A graveside service will be held on Friday, June 12, 2026, at 1:00 p.m. at Park Cemetery.
