Robert Christopher Schmitt
MARQUETTE, MI – Robert Christopher Schmitt, 71, passed away April 28, 2026, at Trillium House, in the care of his family and Lake Superior Life Care and Hospice, following a long brave journey with leukemia.
Born in Kalamazoo, Michigan, to Richard and Jean (Treash) Schmitt, Rob graduated from Hackett High School and earned a B.S. in Water Science from Northern Michigan University, where he met his wife, Karen. They made their home in the Upper Peninsula.
Rob was known for his adventurous spirit, love of the outdoors, and gift for storytelling. He worked in a variety of fields and was best known as the owner of Diver Down Scuba in Marquette, where he built a strong diving community and led many trips, including to Lake Superior shipwrecks and the Caribbean. He also taught scuba and small business at NMU.
He loved being on or near the water, hunting, fishing, and spending time outdoors with his family. He especially cherished time with his sons and grandchildren.
Survivors include his wife of 46 years, Karen; sons Benjamin (Emily) Schmitt and Jacob Schmitt; father Richard; brothers Rick (Karen) and Steven (Julie) Schmitt; sisters Jane (Rick Crack) and Barbara Schmitt; and grandchildren Theodore and Cedar Schmitt. He was preceded in death by his mother Jean and niece, Kelly Sinneave.
An informal gathering to celebrate Rob’s life will be held May 16 from 3-5 p.m. at the Presque Isle Pavilion.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to a sportsmen’s organization, land conservancy, or Trillium House.
