Jason Warren Peterson
GWINN, MI – Jason Warren Peterson, 53, of Gwinn, passed away peacefully on Sunday, April 26, 2026, at his home, surrounded by his loving family, following a 25-month battle with glioblastoma.
Jason was born on October 14, 1972, in Marquette, Michigan, the son of Brian and Valerie (Moffatt) Peterson. He was a 1991 graduate of Marquette Senior High School. Jason met Melissa (Hostetler) Peterson in 1999, and they were married on September 14, 2001. They had two children and an unforgettable 27 years together.
Jason was employed as a maintenance mechanic/wildland firefighter for the Michigan Department of Natural Resources based out of the Marquette Field Office. Over 27 years, he supported DNR offices throughout the Upper Peninsula and Lower Michigan until his retirement on December 31, 2025. He also owned and operated ProHome LLC, offering home inspections and small renovation services, and earned numerous professional certifications, including a Michigan Builder’s License.
In 2023, Jason launched the JP’s Rounds & Ribbons food truck, offering his famous “Round Ones.” Though his diagnosis in 2024 interrupted that journey, it remained an important accomplishment.
He was widely known for his willingness and ability to help others, always ready to lend a hand. Everyone knew who to call, because Jason had a vast knowledge for all things needing repair.
Jason was an avid outdoorsman and shared that love with his family and friends. His interests included hunting, fishing, and time spent at their camp in Fairport, Michigan, and home on the lake. He was especially proud of his children and took an active role in supporting their interests and lifelong pursuits. He was also a proud member of the Sons of the American Legion.
Jason will be profoundly missed by everyone who knew him.
Jason is survived by his wife, Melissa Peterson of Gwinn; his children, Hannah (Augie) Gentz of Ishpeming and Jakob Peterson of Gwinn; his mother, Valerie Peterson of Negaunee; his sister, Terra (Jason) Langham of Michigamme; his nieces, Paselynn, Brylee, and Braelynn Langham; Mother-in-law, Denise Eady; Father-in-law, Scott Hostetler; and his Sister-in-law, Amy Hostetler, all of Marquette. He was preceded in death by his father, Brian Peterson.
A celebration of Jason’s life will be held on Thursday, May 7, 2026 at the UP North Lodge Event Center beginning at 6 pm.
