Timothy R. Smith
MARQUETTE, MI – Timothy Robert Smith, 69, of Marquette, passed away peacefully Wednesday, April 15, 2026 at the Trillium House in the care of his loving family and Lake Superior Life Care & Hospice following a courageous three-year battle with cancer.
Tim was born November 24, 1956 in St. Ignace to Buryl and Beatrice (Maggo) Smith and was a proud graduate of Negaunee High School, Class of 1976. He was employed as a Corrections Officer for Marquette Branch Prison, retiring after 26 years of service.
Tim was an avid fisherman, enjoying many fishing trips to Big Bay De Noc with his family and friends. It truly brought him peace and joy. Tim was a longtime softball player, and many will remember him as a dedicated umpire with over 35 years of experience between Little League, College, and Semi-Pro ball. A Green Bay Packers fanatic, he never missed a game when they were on the gridiron. Above all, Tim enjoyed spending time with his family, especially his beloved grandchildren.
Surviving are his loving companion, Barbara Fassbender of Marquette; two daughters: Kristi Smith of Marquette, and Katie Van Buren of Negaunee; three grandchildren: Jacob (Erin) Smith, Eli Van Buren, and Amelia Van Buren; two great grandchildren: Storm and Zelda; three sisters: Rita (John) Marshall of Sand River, Neva (Jerry) Hill of Negaunee Township, and Joanne (John) Debadart of Iron Mountain; and two brothers: Buryl (Penny) Smith of Palmer, and Mike (Cheryl) Smith of Missouri.
Tim was preceded in death by his parents, four beloved grandchildren; and two sisters: Sharon McMichael and Sally Door.
The family extends a special thank you to The Trillium House staff and Lake Superior Life Care & Hospice for the wonderful care provided.
