Robert J. Hietamaki
GWINN, MI- On April 14, 2026, Robert J. Hietamaki, age 74, left us to join his beloved wife, Carolyn (nee Pelkola).
As a child, we called him Bobby, in high school he was known as Boots (as he always wore them), the Air Force christened him Finn as no one could spell or pronounce our good Finnish name. Some referred to him as Bob or B.J., at Eastwood Nursing Center, in Negaunee, he preferred to be called Robert by the staff.
Bob graduated from Ewen-Trout Creek High School in 1970, where he lettered in track and basketball. Even though he had a high draft number, Bob chose to join the Air Force after graduation and spent several tours in Vietnam and Southeast Asia as a Security K-9 Handler. He finished his enlistment at Wurtsmith AFB and took a four year break from active duty, then returned to the K9-Corp in 1979, newly married to Carolyn, where he served his country until his retirement as a Master Sergeant at K.I. Sawyer AFB. Bob and the base retired together on October 1, 1995.
Bob and Carolyn were an active couple who loved the great outdoors. They spent free time hunting, fishing, snowmobiling, camping and RVing all over the state with their boat and kayaks, along with their cats and dogs.
Per Bob’s request there will be no services. A gracious thank you to those who cared for him at U.P. Health System- Marquette, Eastwood Nursing Center, and especially to the first responders from Forsyth Township, who responded several times during the holidays. Also a special thank you to Bill Kasa, chaplain of American Legion Post 349 in Lake Linden, and all who visited him – May God bless you for your love and kindness.
Rest in peace badge 54989.
