Dorothy Jane Weiland

MARQUETTE, MI – Dorothy J. Weiland, 97, of Marquette, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, April 22, 2026, at Eastwood Nursing Center in Negaunee.

Dorothy was born on December 15, 1928, in Marquette, to Harry and Rose (Lowes) Roose. She was a lifelong resident of the area and a proud graduate of J.D. Pierce High School. She went on to earn her nursing degree from Northern Michigan University’s School of Nursing in 1950, beginning a compassionate and dedicated career in healthcare.

They started with 27 students, ended with 9 and they called themselves the “The Big Nine” keeping in touch throughout the years.

In 1951, Dorothy married George Weiland in Marquette. Together they built a loving family.

Dorothy devoted 44 years to her career as a registered nurse, beginning at St. Luke’s Hospital and later serving at Marquette General Hospital. Throughout her career, she held a variety of nursing positions, earning the respect of her colleagues and providing exceptional care to countless patients until her retirement in 1994.

She was a faithful member of St. Louis the King Catholic Church and the Alba Morris Retired Nursing organization.

Dorothy had a generous spirit and a deep love for helping others. She enjoyed knitting, especially creating Christmas stockings for family and friends, as well as hats and mittens that she quietly donated to those in need. She never sought recognition. In her spare time, Dorothy could often be found assisting her husband at his bike shop, Weiland’s Bike Shop on Third Street. She was an avid Detroit Tiger and Red Wings fan, and loved playing cribbage, taking great pride in her victories.

Dorothy is survived by her daughters, Cindy (Jon) Nebel and Paulette Couture, both of Marquette, and Sandy (Glenn) Libby of Wonder Lake, Illinois; her sons, Bruce (Mary) Weiland of Milwaukee, Wisconsin, Donald (Tina) Weiland of Marquette, and James (Debbie) Weiland of Daytona Beach, Florida; her brother, Michael (Marguerite) Roose of Iron Mountain; nine grandchildren; thirteen great grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her beloved husband, George Weiland; her son, Frederick Weiland; her sisters, Margaret Jezdimir and Rita Westover; her brother, Hank Roose; and her son-in-law, Paul Couture.
