Roy Tossava
MARQUETTE, MI- In loving memory, Roy Elden Tossava, age 90, passed away peacefully February 18, 2026 in Marquette, Michigan.
Born August 31, 1935 in Mohawk, Michigan to Benhart and Sigrid (Lapert) Tossava, Roy’s life was rooted in the Upper Peninsula, where he developed a strong sense of dedication and community.
Roy attended Calumet High School before serving four years in the United States Navy during the Korean War aboard the USS Yosemite. His service was marked by camaraderie and initiative, including the memorable act of placing a Christmas tree atop his ship to lift the spirits of fellow sailors.
Following his honorable discharge, Roy pursued electronics at Rets Institute in Detroit, which became the foundation of his professional life. He owned and operated Two Way Radio in Detroit and Traverse City, providing vital communication solutions to local communities. Later, he served as a radio technician for the Michigan State Police at the Negaunee Post, ensuring reliable communications for officers until his retirement.
Surviving are his wife of 66 years, Jeanette ‘Jan’ (Moilanen) Tossava and together they raised three daughters: Paula, Lynne and Kristen. He was a devoted grandfather to Jamie Gauthier, Matthew (Megan) Croschere and Ryan Tossava; great-grandfather to Alexis Mayzes (Dexter Mukavetz), Tabytha Mayzes, BentLee Gauthier, Leah and Sadie Croschere; and great-great-grandfather to Lincoln Lee Mukavetz. He is also remembered by many nieces and nephews.
Roy was known for his skills in electronics, woodworking and building projects. He enjoyed snowmobiling, cross-country skiing, hockey goaltending, horseshoe tournaments, and tending to horses and chickens in Traverse City. Music was central to his life; he played accordion. He was a member of the American Legion, Eagles, VFW, Elks and Rod & Gun Club.
A proud member of Immanuel Lutheran Church in Negaunee and deeply connected to his Finnish heritage, Roy leaves behind a legacy of kindness, ingenuity and devotion. May his memory bring comfort to all whose lives he touched.
