HENDERSON, NV – It is with deep sorrow that the family of John Walfrid Johnson announce his passing on August 25, 2025, in Henderson, NV at the age of 90. He was born on May 25, 1935, in Marquette, MI, to Luella and Walfrid Johnson.

John graduated from Graveraet High School in 1953, and continued his education at Michigan Tech where he obtained a degree in chemistry after a two year stint in the army. He worked at Hanford in Richland, WA before obtaining a PhD in Chemical Physics at Washington State University. He spent the next decade working for Texas A&M University, mostly in the oceanography department.

John shifted his career from chemistry to computer programming, working for military contractors in Lawton, OK. He and his wife Elsie enjoyed hiking and volunteering at the nearby Wichita Mountain Wildlife Refuge. After his retirement, John moved to Henderson, NV to be near his daughter.

John is survived by his brother Neil, his sister Linda, his three children Kevin, Elizabeth and Douglas, his three grandchildren Daniel, Nicholas and Erin and his three great-grandchildren Xara, Ezra and Roman. He was preceded in death by his parents, his brother Alan, his wife Elsie and his grandson Michael and granddaughter Lauren.

A graveside service will be held in Marquette, MI on August 10, 2026, where his ashes will be buried along with his wife and grandson.
