Dana M. Varvil
POWELL TWP.,MI- Dana M. Varvil, 72, of Powell Township, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, February 4, 2026, at Brookridge Heights Assisted Living, surrounded by his loving family and under the compassionate care of U.P. Home Health and Hospice.
Dana was born on August 20, 1953, in Marquette, MI, to Dana V. and Fern M. (O’Donnell) Varvil. He was a graduate of Marquette Senior High School and later attended Michigan Technological University, where he earned an associate degree in forestry. Dana put his education to work in the family logging business, where he spent many years working alongside family, applying his forestry training and lifelong respect for the land.
On May 15, 1976, Dana married the former Rena Hanson. Together they made their home on the family property off County Road 550, where they raised their three daughters.
Dana was later employed by the Marquette Board of Light and Power for 20 years prior to his retirement. He had a lifelong love for the outdoors and especially enjoyed hunting, fishing, trapping, and camping-activities that reflected both his upbringing and his love for Michigan’s Upper Peninsula.
Dana is survived by his three daughters, Jen (Dan) Nelson of East Lansing, MI, Brooke (Brad) Knaus of Traunik, MI, and Abby (Steve) Perry of Rock, MI; his grandchildren, Taylor Nelson, Rena Ott, Ellie Swick, Josie Knaus, John Knaus, and Austin Perry; two great-grandchildren, Giavona and Chip; and his sister, Candee Varvil of Panama City Beach, FL.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Dana and Fern Varvil, and by his wife, Rena Varvil.
In accordance with Dana’s wishes, no formal services will be held.
