John Carl Ketola

BELLAIRE, MI- John Carlo Ketola, 77, of Bellaire, Michigan, passed away peacefully on December 27, 2025. He is now reunited in Heaven with the love of his life of 52 years, Jeanette Ketola.

John spent most of his life in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan in Gwinn, a place that shaped who he was and always held his heart. He was proud to be a true “Yooper” and carried that pride with him even after moving to Bellaire, Michigan to be closer to family. Wherever John lived, he made it feel like home-not just for himself, but for everyone around him.

Family and friends were at the center of John’s life. He loved deeply and generously, earning a reputation as a “second dad” to many of his children’s friends while they were growing up. John had a gift for bringing people together, whether it was hosting summer parties, lighting bonfires, or simply opening his home to anyone who stopped by. Laughter and conversation were never in short supply when John was around.

Some of John’s happiest moments were the simple ones: summer barbecues on Johnson Lake, pontoon boat rides, snow plowing alongside his grandson Nolan, and a spirited game of cribbage. He had a special love for animals“especially dogs”and was a lifelong, loyal fan of the Detroit Tigers and Detroit Lions, standing by them through every high and low.

John was a hardworking man who took pride in building things that lasted. After graduating from Gwinn High School in 1966 and earning a degree from Northern Michigan University, he worked at Cleveland Cliffs and Barton Malow before fulfilling his lifelong dream of owning his own business as a general contractor. His work reflected the same qualities he lived byädedication, honesty, and pride in doing things the right way.

John was preceded in death by his beloved wife Jeanette; his parents, Carlo and Nina Ketola; and his brother-in-law, Jerry Vertanen.

He is survived by his son, Todd Ketola (Connie) of Brighton, Michigan; his daughter, Lori Ketola of St. Petersburg, Florida; his grandson, Nolan Ketola of Brighton, Michigan; his sister, Nora DiLaura (David) of Rochester Hills, Michigan; Nina Vertanen of Ames, Iowa; Carla Ketola of DeBary, Florida; and many extended family members and dear friends.

John will be deeply missed and fondly remembered for his warmth, his kindness, and the way he made people feel welcome. His legacy lives on in the stories shared, the memories made, and the love he gave so freely.
