James “Jim” William Perttunen

MARQUETTE, MI- James “Jim” William Perttunen, of Marquette, passed away peacefully on December 29, 2025, at the age of 82.

Jim was born on October 1, 1943, in Ishpeming, MI and lived a life grounded in devotion – to his family, to those he loved, and to the values he carried quietly but steadfastly each day.

While serving in the Marines and stationed in California, Jim met the love of his life, Karen. Together, they shared a beautiful adventure. After his military discharge, they returned to Marquette, where they built a home based on love and welcoming arms.

Jim’s spirit was steady and reassuring, like a gentle anchor. He was not loud in nature, but his presence was deeply felt. Loyal, resilient, thoughtful, and kind, he supported the people he loved simply by being who he was. He listened closely, and when he spoke, his words carried warmth, wisdom, and intention.

A devoted family man, Jim worked tirelessly to provide for Karen and their two daughters, often spending long periods away working out-of-town to ensure they had everything they needed. When home, he was present in every way that mattered, encouraging his daughters’ activities, creating memories on camping trips, and finding peace in the simply joys of life.

In their later years, Jim and Karen found joy in attending sporting events together, especially NMU hockey. Long-time season ticket holders, their first journey to the NCAA Frozen Four in 1997 sparked years of cherished family trips. From 2004 to 2019, Jim, Karen, their eldest daughter, and two grandchildren continued that tradition, traveling together and cheering on their favorite teams.

Jim will be deeply missed by all who were blessed to know him. His quiet strength, gentle humor, and unwavering love will remain with his family forever.

If you wish to honor Jim’s life and the kindness he shared, donations may be made to Lake Superior Life Care and Hospice, 914 W. Baraga Ave., Marquette, MI 49855.
