Alverna Thompson

Verna was born February 14, 1937 in Negaunee to Dominic and Anna (Aho) Cavallo and was a graduate of Negaunee High School. She then earned her RN Degree from Augustana Hospital in Chicago before starting her nursing career at Resurrection Hospital. Verna also worked at Holy Family Hospital and eventually retired from Lutheran General Hospital. She and her late husband moved back to the UP and enjoyed retirement in Marquette. Verna loved walking and spending time along Lake Superior at Presque Isle.

Surviving are her son: Michael (Mary Ann) Thompson of Roselle, Illinois; two daughters: Susan (Guy) Raymond of Florida and Kathy (Steven) Levine of Peoria, Illinois; three grandchildren: Eric (Anne) and Matt Levine, and Ashley (Scott) Surowiecki; and her special friend and caregiver, Mary Short.

She was preceded in death by her parents and her husband John ‘Jack’ Thompson in 1995.

Funeral services will be held on Thursday, January 8th at 1:00 PM at Koskey Funeral Home with Rev. Emmanuel Barwuah officiating. Visitation will be held for one hour prior to services at the funeral home on Thursday. Burial will take place next to her husband in the Negaunee Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be directed to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital in Verna’s memory.
