Alice Wertanen

NEGAUNEE TWP., MI- Alice Virginia Wertanen, 97, of Negaunee Township, passed away Friday afternoon, January 9, 2026 at UP Health System Marquette while in the care of her loving family.

Alice was born May 4, 1928 in Negaunee to Rudolph and Alina (Peterson) Johnson and attended school in Negaunee. She married the late Arnold Wertanen and they raised their family on County Road 480. She was a devoted wife, mother and homemaker, and worked as a secretary for Trudell Plumbing and Heating in her younger years.

Alice enjoyed many things outdoors; going to camp, feeding the deer, camping with family and fishing. She loved a good sauna, Friday fish fry and most importantly, being with family and her beloved grandchildren.

Surviving are her daughter, Susan (John) Roberts of Negaunee; Daniel (Debbie) Wertanen of Negaunee Township; brother, Robert ‘Rawhide’ Johnson; four grandchildren: Nita Roberts, Shelle (Tom) Colombe, Brian Roberts and Dustin Wertanen; four great-grandchildren: Elle and Neriah Colombe and Briceson and Blake Roberts; and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Arnold, in 1994; brother, Leonard Johnson; and two sisters: Mabel Gratkins and Dorothy Reeves.

Private family services will be held. Burial will take place next to her husband in the Negaunee Cemetery.

Alice’s family extends a special thank you to the staffs at the Marquette County Medical Care Facility and UPHS Marquette for their wonderful care provided.
