Karen Louise Maki
MARQUETTE, MI- Karen Louise Maki, 86, of Marquette, passed away Sunday morning, December 21, 2025, at Brookridge Heights Assisted Living.
She was born April 29, 1939, in Marquette, a daughter of Bernard and Risper (Pelletier) Gentz. She was a 1957 graduate of Graveraet High School, earned a Bachelor’s and Master’s degree from NMU and was a lifelong area resident.
On April 12, 1958 she married Donald V. Maki.
Karen worked as a 4th grade school teacher in the Skandia and Gwinn Schools.
She was a member of the Marquette Golf Club and played league golf. She played the piano and organ, travelled to various places throughout the world, enjoyed taking cruises, spending time at the beach and was a lover of animals, especially her beloved dog, Allie. One of Karen’s favorite places was her home in Florida. It was a special place to her and the family that they enjoyed for several years and made many wonderful memories.
Karen is survived by her son, Dan (Ginger) Maki; daughter, Lori Haapalainen, both of Marquette; six grandchildren, Jason and Chad (Nikki) Barber, Ryan (Stacy) and Terra Maki, and Dylan and Tanner Hamari; sisters, Sally (Randy) Duer and Verlie Sandell of Marquette.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Donald V. Maki; daughters, Jayne Maki and Karri Hamari; sister, Judy Kuchler; and brother, David Gentz.
A private funeral service was held at Fassbender Swanson Hansen Funeral and Cremation Services. Interment will take place in Park Cemetery.
