Gary T. Anderson
ISHPEMING, MI- Gary T. Anderson of Ishpeming, Michigan, passed away on December 6th following a brief hospitalization for a chronic illness at Aurora BayCare Medical Center in Green Bay, Wisconsin.
A dedicated and hardworking man, Gary retired from Cleveland-Cliffs (CCI) after 35 years of service in a variety of roles, including diamond driller, laborer, welder, and plant repairman.
He was a member of Bethel Lutheran Church in Ishpeming, though he often preferred spending his Sunday mornings at his camp on Lake Arfelin. The outdoors were his greatest joy. He loved hunting and fishing and especially treasured the time spent at deer camp with his children and grandchildren during hunting season. His camp at Arfelin Lake held a special place in his heart, and over the years he formed many lasting friendships there. Gary also served as mayor at times for the Arfelin Lake Association and was always willing to lend a hand wherever needed.
When he was not at camp, Gary was an active member of several local organizations, including the Ishpeming Elks Lodge #447, Eagles Club, Brownstone Club, and Riverside Club. He also enjoyed his time participating in the Republic Sportsman’s Club and Rabbit Club. Gary made many friends in these communities and enjoyed sharing stories, especially those involving his outdoor adventures-over a beer and good conversation.
Gary is survived by his wife, Sharon Anderson; his children Douglas (Bobbi Jo) Anderson, Thomas (Chelsea) Anderson, Justina (David) Helsten, and Lynn (John) Olson; his stepchildren Kevin (Patty) Hooper, Darin (Jamie) Hooper, Dawn (Dave) Rentmeester, and Tammy (Mike) Laurila; and his sister, Kathleen Chavez, along with nieces Kris (John) French and Theresa (Joe) Mashburn. He is also survived by 26 grandchildren and 4 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his father, Adolph Anderson; his mother, Linnea Anderson; his brother, Douglas Anderson; and his stepson, Jason Makela.
Gary’s family will greet relatives and friends at the Bjork and Zhulkie Funeral Home on Saturday December 20, 2025 from 1:00pm until 3:00pm. An Elks service and funeral service will begin at 3:00pm. Following the service all are invited to the Ishpeming Elks Lodge #447 to continue celebrating Gary’s life and where a meal will be served.
The family would like to express their heartfelt gratitude for the support Gary received over the years from Ken and Laurie Schon, Mark and Roxi Willey, his niece Kris French, his stepson Darin and wife Jamie Hooper, and many others, including Bob Antilla, Richard Nicholas, and life-long friend John Erkkila.
