Margaret Marie Havican

MARQUETTE, MI-Margaret Marie Havican, age 89, of Marquette, entered eternal rest on Thursday, October 2, 2025, at the Marquette County Medical Care Facility, surrounded by the love of her family and in the compassionate care of Upper Peninsula Home Health and Hospice.
Born June 14, 1936, in Marquette, Margaret was the daughter of Troy and Marie (Pouttu) Howard. She was raised in Marquette and graduated from Graveraet High School with the Class of 1954. Following her graduation, she pursued a degree in nursing in Flint. Upon completing her education, she returned to Marquette and, on April 11, 1959, was united in marriage to Emmett Havican. Together they established their home and raised two children.
Margaret devoted her life to caring for others. She began her professional career as a private duty nurse and later worked in local physicians’ offices before dedicating many years to the substance abuse program at Marquette General Hospital. Her service spanned more than three decades, and she retired in 1998 after over 35 years in nursing.
Beyond her career, Margaret enjoyed a vibrant social life. She was active in the Sociable Singles Club, where she especially looked forward to card games of UNO, and she was a proud member of the Red Hats Society, where she was known for her sense of humor and talent for delivering jokes at gatherings. She loved shopping, cherished the companionship of her beloved dogs-each affectionately named after famous personalities-and could often be seen driving her yellow Jeep Cherokee. Most of all, she treasured time spent with her children and grandchildren, who were her greatest joy.
Survivors include her children, Joseph (Stefanie) Havican of Marquette and Julie (Mark) Green Poirier of Ishpeming; her grandchildren, Zakary Green, Tayler Green, Trevor (Jenny) Havican, Jarod Havican, and Sabrina (Steven) Niemi; and her great-grandchildren, Finnley and Freya Havican and Marcelo Niemi. Preceding her in death were her parents and her husband, Emmett, in 1987.
The family wishes to express their deepest gratitude to the staff of the Marquette County Medical Care Facility, the caregivers of Upper Peninsula Home Health and Hospice, as well as the Marquette Senior Center and RSVP, for their many kindnesses and dedicated care.
