Jay Allen Stewart

MARQUETTE, MI – Jay Allen Stewart, of Marquette, lived a full 98 years, passing peacefully on October 6th, with loved ones by his side. He was a remarkable man. A beloved and cherished brother, uncle, and friend who touched many lives.

Jay was born in New Milford, Connecticut on May 26, 1927, and raised in Fulton, New York, by his parents, Willard and Laura (Steele) Stewart. After high school and Naval duty, Jay attended Clarkson College, earning a Bachelor’s Degree in Electrical Engineering. Following graduation, Jay embarked on a distinguished career, working as an electrical engineer for large industrial projects around the world.

In 1951, he met and married Lotta Osterberg. Together they built a full and loving life until Lotta’s passing in 2018. They lived on Long Island for over 50 years and traveled the world. Upon retirement, they moved to Lotta’s hometown of Marquette. Here they became involved in supporting the arts, music, historical, and Finnish organizations throughout the area.

Jay retired but never really slowed down. Instead, he became an iconic rollerblader at the age of 68, until he hung up his skates at 86 years young. His glides looked effortless as he skated the parks and trails around Marquette. Jay found beauty in nature, whether collecting seashells or rocks along a beach, or spotting and identifying thousands of birds from his kitchen window.

He also had a deep appreciation for people. Jay’s warmth, kindness, and genuine interest in people drew people to him. If you knew Jay, you knew you had a friend. Until his final days, he educated and captivated us with his experiences and stories. He was a gentle man, with intelligent curiosity, and a gracious spirit, that cared about humanity.

Jay is survived by his sister Carol, and many nieces and nephews who will carry forward his legacy of joy, curiosity, and compassion.

He was preceded in death by his parents, brother, and beloved wife Lotta, and other dear family members.

The family wishes to thank: The wonderful caregivers who showered him with kindness and support. To Lake Superior Hospice and their volunteers who cared so well for Jay. To Dr Katie Brang for her ability to provide the medical care Jay needed, when he needed it. And to Scott, for his love of birds, and natural wonders…and keeping the bird feeders filled…Jay loved your visits. And to all the neighbors and friends who loved on Jay…thank you. You have no idea how much each of your visits meant to Jay, and to his family. A HEARTFELT BLESSING TO EACH OF YOU.
