Thomas Alan Broderick

MARQUETTE, MI – Thomas Alan Broderick, age 77, of Marquette, passed away peacefully at home on September 18, 2025, surrounded by his family.
Born in New York City, New York, on September 11, 1948, the son of Alan and Natalia (Bender) Broderick, Tom was raised in Ishpeming, Michigan. He graduated from St. John’s Military Academy in 1966 and went on to earn his bachelor’s degree in Communications from Northern Michigan University. In 1982, he achieved his master’s degree in Safety Engineering from University of Minnesota, Duluth, continuing his lifelong commitment to learning and leadership.
Tom built a distinguished career in construction safety, a field he cared deeply about. Known as a workaholic who loved what he did, he served as a safety director for major construction and engineering projects, including nuclear and fossil-fuel power plants, paper mills, and large industrial works. His technical expertise benefited companies such as Blount Construction, Stone & Webster Engineering, and Rust Engineering. Beyond his professional roles, Tom authored and co-authored numerous works on construction safety, with topics ranging from injury prevention to managing overhead power-line hazards.
As a mentor, educator, and leader, Tom was deeply respected across the industry. He championed training programs, elevated safety standards, and guided countless younger professionals in the field. His dedication left worksites safer and the industry stronger. Tom retired in 2012 as Executive Director of the Construction Safety Council, leaving behind a legacy of excellence and care.
On a personal level, Tom married the love of his life, Sharon Miller, in January of 1977. Together, they built a life full of adventure, living in various places and making lifelong memories until Sharon’s passing in 2014.
Tom’s hobbies brought him joy throughout his life. He enjoyed fishing, cross-country and water skiing, camping, and taking scenic drives. Football games, music, and time at camp were among his favorite ways to relax. Known as larger than life, Tom was beloved by his family, friends, and colleagues. His kindness, humor, and wisdom made him not only the world’s best manager, but also a cherished father, grandfather, and friend.
He is survived by his children: Destry Broderick of Marquette; Marie (Will) Bowlin of Birmingham, Alabama; Credence Sol of Rochecorbon, Centre, France; and Stephanie Wellman of Marquette. Also surviving are his sister, Kathryn Broderick of Portland, Oregon; and grandchildren Anne Marie, Dallas, Tyler, Izzy, Matilda, Michaela, Eillis, Rafael, Didier, Bruno, Amelia, and Cecilia.
Tom was preceded in death by his parents; his beloved wife, Sharon; and his faithful dog, Sage.
His family and friends will forever remember him as a man of strength, dedication, and deep love. His influence will carry on in every life he touched and in every safe workplace shaped by his commitment.
