Marvin Kangas

PALMER, MI – Marvin John Kangas, 90, longtime Palmer resident, passed away peacefully at home Friday morning, September 19, 2025 while in the care of his loving family and UP Home Health and Hospice.
Marvin was born February 10, 1935 in Ishpeming to John and Doreen (Wallis) Kangas, atteneded Eagle Mills School and then graduated from Gwinn High School, Class of 1954. He enlisted in the United States Army in September of that year, honorably serving his country for three years. Marvin married Doris Maki September 29, 1955 and they raised their family in Palmer.
In his early years, Marvin worked for P&M Construction and plowed at KI Sawyer during winter months. In 1965, he began his career with Cleveland Cliffs, employed as a welder and maintenance repairmen, retiring in 1996 with over 30 years of service.
Mr. Kangas was a member of the Richmond Township Fire Department where he served as Assistant Chief. He was also a licensed EMT. Marvin enjoyed the outdoors; hunting, fishing, and spending time at the hunting/fishing camp in Deerton that he was proud of building. More than anything, he was a hardworking man who most loved spending time with his family.
Surviving are his daughter, Charlene (Jerry Iery) Kangas of Palmer; son, Randal Kangas of Midway Location; grandchildren: Lindsey and Nathan Kangas, Ashley (Jesse) Smith, Kylie (Josh) Underwood and Kaleb Kangas; great-grandchildren: Josie Smith, Layla Perkins and Freya Underwood; his sister, Sharon (Earl) Hannan, of Columbus, OH; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife Doris in 2012; his son and daughter-in-law, Gary (Patti) Kangas; brother, Wally; his sister Doreen ‘Betty’ (William) Pietila and an infant sister, Ruth.
A Celebration of Life will be held from 4-6 pm on Thursday, September 25th at the Richmond Township Fire Hall.
