Elaine Racine

ISHPEMING, MI Elaine Marie Racine, age 77, a beloved mother, grandmother, and a true pillar of the Ishpeming community, passed away on Tuesday, September 2, 2025. Surrounded by family and friends during her final days, she passed peacefully at the Trillium House in Marquette under the compassionate care of Lake Superior Life Care and Hospice.

Elaine was born in Ishpeming on September 14, 1947, to Clifford and Joyce (Peterson) Lehto, and was raised there alongside her two sisters. A proud graduate of Ishpeming High School’s Class of 1965, she was a woman who always stood out. With a unique style you always knew when Elaine was in the room; she made a point of mingling with everyone, especially seeking out and including those who might have otherwise been left on their own.

She began her career as a secretary at Bell Memorial Hospital, she was very proud of this first position where she worked to do all parts of the job well, no matter how small. This strong work ethic, combined with a love for entertaining people, led her to launch a catering business in the mid-1980s. In 1990, she opened Elaine’s Place on Third Street. Elaine’s Place was a community fixture for over 30 years, but for many, the real reason to stop in was to see Elaine herself. She was as much a part of the store as the products on the shelves, running it until her retirement in 2022.

Elaine was proud of her family and what they had become, and she was the proudest supporter of her sons, Scott and Brett. She was always quick to brag about the accomplishments of her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren, living vicariously through their successes.

In her marriage to Bob LaBo, she found a gentle and caring companionship. They were both members of St. John’s Catholic Church and shared a special passion for Corvettes, spending many happy days driving to car meets together. She also greatly cherished the quiet, peaceful times they spent together at home.

Elaine truly came alive during the holiday season. For her, it all began with Thanksgiving, where for over 35 years she helped prepare the community meal at Bethel Lutheran Church. This kicked off her favorite time of year, when she would bring joy to children as Ishpeming’s Mrs. Claus. That spirit of giving was part of her year-round, as she had a special knack for finding the perfect card or gift for friends and family.

Her vibrant social life included being a member of the ELKS club, traveling, attending Buzz the Gut, and, of course, playing cards with ‘the girls.’ She was the glue that held her friend group together, ensuring their time was always filled with laughter and fun. Anyone who knew Elaine also knew her beloved dogs, who she referred to as her ‘kids’; throughout the years, she enjoyed the companionship of Gordita, Petunia, Guido, and Leonardo (always ‘Leonardo,’ never just ‘Leo’). Above all, Elaine’s greatest passion was sharing her life with others. She proudly spoiled her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, traveling to see them and helping with their schooling. She invited everyone, family and friends alike, to join her in the activities and places she loved, hoping they would find as much joy in them as she did.

Elaine is survived by her sons Brett (Chris) Anttila of Ishpeming and Scott (Edith) Anttila of Royal Oak; grandchildren Grant, Sannah, Tyler, and Brittany; great-grandchildren Xander and Derrek; her nieces Ava and Bria; her nephew Jake; many cousins; and her dear friends Diane and JoAnn Betts, and MaryEllen Peterson.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband Bob; and her sisters Carol Truscott and Susan Lehto.

The family will greet relatives and friends from 9:00am 11:00am on Saturday September 6, 2025, at the St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church. A Mass of Christian Burial will follow at 11:00am on Saturday with Fr. Larry Van Damme officiating. A luncheon will take place following the services in the K/D Hall. Interment will take place at a later date.

Elaine’s legacy lives on in every meal shared, every child’s smile, and every corner of the community she loved so deeply. Her spirit will forever be part of Ishpeming. Elaine’s obituary may also be viewed at bjorkandzhulkie.com where relatives and friends may leave a note of remembrance.
