Douglas Wayne Scheuneman

MUNISING, MI- Douglas Wayne Scheuneman, Sr. age 83, of Munising, died Wednesday, September 17, 2025 at Medilodge of Munising.
Born January 27, 1942 in Grand Rapids, MI to the late Ivan and Bette (Nelson) Scheuneman, Doug grew up in Grand Rapids graduating from Ottawa High School in 1960. Doug then attended Grand Rapids Junior College for 2 years playing basketball before attending Michigan Tech where he achieved recognition as MVP on their basketball team for the 1962-63 season and later in life was offered to enter their hall of fame with his basketball abilities from that time (he declined the offer). Doug obtained his Forestry degree at MTU and it is also where he met his best friend, Mike Henricksen, which eventually led him to the town of Munising where he worked with Mike at Lake State Wood Preserving, later becoming Hiawatha Log Homes. For the last 10 years of his forestry career, Doug worked as a buyer for Timber Products until he retired at age 65. In his forestry role, Doug served as President of the Timberman’s Association.
Doug met his wife Helen while working at Owens Illinois, a paper mill in Tomahawk, WI. They were married in June of 1967. They traveled to a few different locations while welcoming daughter Heidi, and twins Doug and Kris before settling in Munising in the summer of 1973.
Doug was an avid outdoorsman and was known to be upset if he couldn’t hunt or fish at least 360 out of 365 days per year. He shared this great love and passion by serving as President for a time with the Alger Fish and Game Alliance and also served on the Ducks Unlimited committee. Over the years, Doug was blessed with many hunting and fishing trips that allowed him to share memories for years and years. He had some close “regular” hunting/fishing friends and also some great out west hunting trips with a few others. Most importantly, Doug shared this passion with son Doug (and his friends) and his grandsons Bill and Quest taking them on a variety of fishing and hunting adventures over the years that hopefully will be engraved on their hearts for a lifetime, as it was for Doug.
Doug was known to be a frugal man. He was teased often by his family regarding this. He was known to stop for a single glove on the road. He taught his grandson Quest how to save gas by “throwing” the vehicle into neutral when going down a hill and was known to walk behind Helen and his daughters shutting lights off in the kitchen to save on electricity and kept the thermostat quite low. Family and friends knew to wear an extra layer in the winter when visiting. Although his family teased him about this, they knew that he was not frugal with his love for them and his desire for them to be successful and happy in life with all their endeavors.
Although the decision to put Doug in the nursing home in his final days was not easy to make, and we all know it would not have been his wish, it was in this setting at the end, that his family experienced a “terminal lucidity” phenomena, where he had significant improvement in his cognitive function and was able to smile and laugh again and carry on quite the conversations with his family. This part of him had been gone for quite some time with his advancing dementia. It was a true blessing from God for them all to treasure and remember him in a much more positive, loving light than the awful disease that dementia presented in him.
Doug is survived by his wife of over 58 years, Helen. His children, Heidi (Rich) Prunick, Douglas Scheuneman, Jr., and Kris (Bill) Tidd; Grandchildren Richard (Chelsea) Prunick, William (Elizabeth) Tidd, Quest Tidd (Rianna Brothers); Great grandchildren Julia Prunick, Evi Prunick, Avery, Audra and Adrien Tidd and his sister Barbara Schneider. Doug was preceded in death by his parents, and many aunts and uncles.
Doug’s family would like to thank the caring staff at Medilodge, Commission on Aging, and North Woods Home Health and Hospice for the loving care they provided him.
For those wishing to make a charitable contribution in his memory, in lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Ducks Unlimited or Eden Lutheran Church of Munising.
Visitation will be on Thursday, September 25, 2025 at Eden Lutheran Church in Munising from 10:00 a.m. until 12:00 noon. Vicar Elaine Robbins will conduct Doug’s memorial service at 12:00.
