Margaret Lahtela

REPUBLIC, MI-Margaret A. Lahtela (Peggy), age 79, a lifelong area resident, passed away on Monday, July 28, 2025, at Bellin Hospital in Green Bay, while surrounded by her loving family and the compassionate hospital staff.
Peggy was born in Marquette on June 28, 1946, the daughter of the late Russell and Isabelle (Belle) (Pepin) Oien. She graduated from Republic High School with the class of 1964 and married her devoted husband of 53 years, Robert Lahtela, on June 12, 1965.
A dedicated wife, mother, and grandmother, Peggy always prioritized her family. She found joy in spending quality time with her loved ones, whether it was traveling, enjoying moments at the family cottage, or engaging in friendly games of cards or dominoes.
In addition to her family, Peggy was blessed to have a very close circle of friends who she cherished dearly. Her welcoming nature, kindness, and generosity resonated with all who knew her, leaving a lasting impression on many.
Peggy’s creative spirit was evident in her diverse range of crafting hobbies, which included knitting, quilting, and creating intricate stained-glass artwork that she generously shared with her family and friends. A dedicated reader, Peggy was never far from a book, reflecting her love for literature.
Throughout her life, Peggy actively participated in various Republic organizations, most notably being a lifelong contributing member of St. Augustine Catholic Parish, serving on the Republic-Michigamme School Library Board, being a member of Republic Community Services, and participating in the Bethany Quilting Group.
Peggy is survived by 2 children- Beth Lahtela, Brian (Grace) Lahtela, sister- Virgina ‘Ginny’ (David) Neuman, 3 grandchildren- Dylan, Paige, and Taylor Lahtela, along with several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband- Robert Lahtela, and infant son- Kent.
A Mass and Celebration of Peggy’s life will be held at the St. Augustine Catholic Church at a later date.
