Jeffrey Mathews

ISHPEMING, MI-Jeffrey Allan Mathews, age 75, of Ishpeming, passed away on Friday, July 4, 2025, at UP Health System ­ Marquette, after a courageous battle with cancer, with his loving family by his side.

Jeffrey was born on July 14, 1949, in Dover, Ohio, a son of the late Raymond Jr. and Betty (Metzger) Mathews. He graduated from Dover High School and went on to attend diesel mechanic school at Detroit Diesel.

In 1969, Jeff proudly enlisted in the United States Air Force, serving honorably as a crew chief during the Vietnam War. After his tour in Vietnam, he was stationed at K.I. Sawyer Air Force Base. He received his honorable discharge in 1973. Following his military service, Jeff continued his education at Kent State University.

Jeff made the Upper Peninsula his home and worked as a heavy equipment mechanic for Cleveland Cliffs Iron Company, dedicating over 28 years to his trade. He was known for his strong work ethic and mechanical expertise.

Outside of work, Jeff found joy in the outdoors and the freedom of the open road. He was an avid motorcycle enthusiast and proud member of the Harley Owners Group (HOG), enjoying countless rides and shared adventures. After retiring, Jeff and his wife, Julie, spent their winters traveling in their motorhome. He also had a lifelong love of fishing and being in nature.

Jeff is survived by his loving wife of 50 years, Julie (Polkinghorne) Mathews, whom he married on April 5, 1975; two sons, Jarred Mathews and Steven Mathews; a grandson, Jeffrey (Emma) Mathews; and a great-grandson, Ryatt Mathews. He is also survived by his sister, Sally Mathews; two brothers, Tim (Marty) Mathews and Ed Mathews, sister-in-law Miyuki Mathews; along with numerous nieces, nephews, and extended family members.

He was preceded in death by his parents and his brother, Gary Mathews.

Jeff’s family will greet relatives and friends on Monday, July 21, 2025, from 11:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon at St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church in Ishpeming. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 12:00 noon, with Fr. Brandon Yanni officiating. A luncheon will follow in the K/D Hall.

Interment will take place at the Ishpeming Cemetery, where military honors will be accorded by the U.S. Air Force and the American Legion Greenwood Post #114.
