David Heikkila, Sr

COVINGTON, MI-David J. Heikkila, Sr, age 78 of Covington, MI passed way Friday, July 4, 2025 at Oscar G. Johnson VA Medical Center in Iron Mountain, MI.
He was born in Negaunee, MI on February 10, 1947 the son of the late Waino and Julia (Nurkkala) Heikkila. David graduated from L’Anse High School in 1965. Following graduation, David joined the United States Marine Corps and served in the Vietnam War from 1966-1969. After his discharge, he was employed by the Cleveland Cliffs corporation for 25 years, retiring in 1993. David was a lifetime member of Covington VFW #8945, a member of Covington Amvets, Covington Fire Department for 53 years, he served as the Covington Deputy Sheriff Constable, the Covington Township for 50 years, Liquor Inspector for Covington Township, and Camp Trotter.
David enjoyed spending time with friends and family, hanging out with the guys at the coffee shop for daily discussions, being outdoors, and spending time at his camp feeding the turkeys and deer throughout the winter, along with feeding the humming birds and chipmunks at home. David was a social butterfly that could talk about anything with all the people he came across. He also enjoyed lawn mowing and keeping downtown Covington to his specifications.
David is survived by his wife Candace Heikkila of Covington, children Emmie (Rob) Younggren of Covington, Kevin Heikkila of Calumet, Brian Kerttu of Covington, Rich (Tammy) Kerttu of Iron River, David (Dawn) Heikkila, Jr of Albert Lee, MN, and Rachael (Carl) Lassi of Watton. 8 grandchildren: Abbey, Cole, Christopher, Zachary, Sarah, Olivia, Adien, Shelby, and grand puppies Piper ‘Pepper’, Cash and June, his brother John (Erin) Heikkila of Colgate, WI and many nieces, nephews and cousins.
David was preceded in death by his parents Waino and Julia Heikkila, and sisters Carol Maki and Sharon Kearney.
David’s services will be held on Thursday, July 17, 2025 in the Covington Cemetery beginning with the Covington Fire Department Last Call Procession at 11 a.m. followed by military honors, under the direction of the Baraga American Legion Post #444. Immediately following military honors, graveside funeral services will be held with Pastor Rich Little officiating. A luncheon will then be served at the Covington VFW Post #8945.
