Roy Mattson

Born in Ishpeming on March 27, 1937, the son of Vaino and Sadie (Kivela) Mattson, Roy was raised in Negaunee and graduated from Negaunee High School in 1955. He went on to earn his Bachelors Degree in Engineering from Michigan Technological University, launching a successful career that took him to various places before he ultimately returned home to work as an engineer at Cleveland Cliffs for over 20 years.

In his free time, Roy enjoyed hunting at his trailer on the AAA, fishing with his brothers, reading, and spending time with family and friends. He was a member of a local chess club as well as a proud and active member of the Finnish American Club in New Port Richey, Florida.

Known for his intelligence, quick wit, and gentle nature. Roy was the kind of man who would always lend a helping hand.

He is survived by his nieces, Cindy Etten of Marquette, Diane (Mike) Lealos of Kettering, Ohio; his nephew, Jim (Sherry) Mattson of Sands Township, several great-nieces, great-nephews, cousins, and special friend, Mary Ann Laukka.

Roy was preceded in death by his parents; his step-father; and his brothers, Arthur and James Mattson.

Friends may call at Fassbender Swanson Hansen Funeral and Cremation Services on Thursday, June 26, beginning at 11:00 am until the time of service at 12:00 pm. Pastor Chad Mager will officiate. A reception will follow in the funeral home reception room.

In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to the Negaunee Historical Society Museum, 303 East Main Street, Negaunee, MI 49866.
