Edmund Holmgren

IHSPEMING, MI- Edmund ‘Ed’ E. Holmgren, age 85, lifelong Ishpeming resident, passed away on Friday, June 6, 2025 at UP Health System Marquette, while in the loving care of his family, and hospital staff.

Ed was born in Ishpeming on June 1, 1940, son of the late Edmund C., and Laura (Endahl) Holmgren. He was a graduate of Ishpeming High School with the class of 1958. Following graduation, he went on to study at Northern Michigan University for 2 years, before entering the workforce with Delany Ford. Ed was hired at the Marquette County Road Commission in 1968 where he worked for his career, retiring after 30 years of service in 1999. Ed married his wife Susan (Pelto) Holmgren on August 21, 1965, they shared 59 years, 9 months, and 16 days of marriage together.

Ed was a member of the Bethany Lutheran Church in Ishpeming, the Ishpeming Elks Club, where he served as a former Grand Exalted Ruler and District Deputy. He was a member of the Ishpeming Kiwanis Club, VASA, multiple local singing groups, including, the Bethany Church Choir, the Negaunee Male Chorus, and Strictly Gospel to name a few. Ed was honored to be named the Grand Marshal of the Ishpeming parade. He loved the Detroit Lions, and Tigers. Ed along with Ted Matson, was an integral part in starting, and coaching the local American Legion baseball teams back in the 60’s. Ed also enjoyed announcing sports for 50 years for several local radio stations, and ended every broadcast with his signature quote ‘It takes a good sport, to make a sport good’.

Ed is survived by his wife- Sue Holmgren, daughter- Laurie (Steve) Gardner, son- Darren (Jenny) Holmgren, 4 grandchildren- Jordan Mitchell, Mikayla Mitchell, Grace Holmgren, Luke Holmgren, 4 great grandchildren- Esme, Leo, Jayden, and Elliot Jylha, along with several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, and 4 siblings- Lowell Holmgren, Ann Rex, Doris Pellonpaa, and Althea Doney.

Ed’s family will greet relatives and friends from 11:00am until 1:00pm on Wednesday June 11, 2025 at the Bethany Lutheran Church in Ishpeming. An Elks prayer service will be held at 12:45pm. Ed’s funeral service will begin at 1:00pm with Rev. J.M. Mills officiating. A luncheon will follow the services in the church hall. Interment will take place in the Ishpeming Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the Bethany Lutheran Church, or UPAWS in memory of Ed.

Ed’s family would like to extend a special thank you to the staff at the Marquette County Medical Care Facility for the wonderful care they gave to Ed while he resided there over the last two years.
