Deidre Mering

MARQUETTE, MI – Deidre B. Mering, age 79, of Marquette, passed away Friday, May 23, 2025, in the loving care of her family.

Deidre was born January 17, 1946, in Anniston, Alabama, to W.B. and Louise King.

Growing up in a military family, her childhood was spent in Japan, Hawaii, and San Diego. It was in San Diego where she worked as a ward clerk at UCSD Hospital that she met her future husband, James Mering, who was training there. They married on May 13, 1972. Following his training, they moved to Seattle where they lived for nine years. Seeking a smaller town environment to raise their family they moved to Marquette in 1981.

Deidre’s life was focused on her children whom she called her ‘crown jewels’. She could always be found at the schools helping with projects for the PTA and riding herd on the boys. Her enthusiasm and easy laughter followed her everywhere. For her years of work at the schools and PTA she received Presidential recognition.

As the children grew up and began families of their own, she enjoyed watching her grandchildren grow. They all loved ‘Grammy’. She also focused her time on other endeavors being active in the Marquette Study Club, attending the symphony at the high school and NMU, and doting on her many dogs.

Survivors include her husband, James Mering; her daughter, Melissa; sons, Matthew (Aimee), Mark (Hannah), Michael, and Marshall (Rheta); grandsons, Calder, Brodie, and Montgomery; granddaughters, Marlowe and Harper; her sisters, Laura Childs and Grethen Glaeser; several nieces and nephews.

Deidre was preceded in death by her parents, W.B. King and Louise Glaeser; and step-father, Richard Glaeser.

Honoring her request, the family has chosen to honor her memory privately.

Memorials may be directed to UPAWS (Upper Peninsula Animal Welfare Shelter), 815 S. M-553, Gwinn, MI 49841.
