Sally Druskovich Weathersby

AHMEEK, MI-Sally Druskovich Weathersby (formerly Dr. Sally Orr), 68, a resident of Ahmeek, passed away at peace and in comfort Wednesday, May 7, 2025 after a 15 month fight with incurable brain cancer.

Her final two weeks were at the Omega House, Houghton, Michigan where she received the absolute best in care and was visited by many friends and relatives from the Keweenaw and elsewhere. The family is also extremely grateful to the Mayo Clinic for their outstanding treatments and compassionate care provided to Sally.

She was born on Nov. 10, 1956, in Decatur, Michigan, a daughter of the late Carl and Nellie Mae (Young) Druskovich.

Sally was raised on a farm in Decatur and called herself ‘farm girl tough’ her whole life. She graduated from Decatur High School in 1975. Sally graduated from Hope College with degrees in biology and English in 1979. She taught biology at Decatur High School for one year and then took classes at Michigan State University needed to apply for dental school. She graduated from the University of Michigan school of dentistry in 1987.

Sally loved everyone and all loved her. Her positive attitude has been an inspiration to all who had the good fortune to know her. Her smile and cheerful disposition were contagious. She was the bright light that lit up every room she entered.

She provided for the dental health of many in northern Houghton and Keweenaw counties for 30 years. Sally started her dental career with the health department mobile clinic serving underserved communities in the western UP of Michigan. A few years later she was running a dental practice in Laurium.

Education was near and dear to Sally and she served as a director and later president of the CLK Foundation which provides educational tools and supports projects to enhance the educational experience of every CLK student including scholarships for college bound graduates.

Sally was an active member of Grace United Methodist Church in Houghton where she taught Sunday school for 10 or more years. She coached youth soccer teams for several years. She was a mentor and backup mom to many of her daughter’s good friends from elementary school through high school. This was even true for Katherine’s fellow students in college.

She was an extraordinary cook and exceptional baker. Anyone who got a slice of her carrot cake or apple pie slices knows this to be true. Her love of ice cream was legendary and her favorite was two scoops (chocolate on top of vanilla) in a sugar cone. She was a certified master gardener and designed her flower garden to attract birds and especially hummingbirds from late spring through the fall. She was an expert in bird identification and habitat, and loved to watch the feeders out the back window of the house where many birds species would visit on a regular basis.

She was an accomplished woodworker and installed hardwood and tile flooring throughout her house. She also mastered wall tiling and remodeled bathrooms. She learned to scuba dive and explored many shipwreck in Lake Superior. She also dove in Hawaii, Jamaica, the Florida Keys, and even the Seychelles in the Indian Ocean. She took a motorcycle safety class, purchased and rode a motorcycle in the Keweenaw for a few years. Her only issue with the motorcycle was that there was no seat belt.

After retirement, she hiked in more than half the US National Parks and many national monuments. She loved to walk the two mile loop in the neighborhood with one of her best friends 5 days a week, rain, snow or shine where they solved all the world’s problems.

She was a gifted storyteller who loved to tell humorous stories about experiences involving family joy and sometimes mishaps. Many stories had morals, or were told to explain her point of view or to encourage others when they were down.

Sally’s was a life well lived and would want us to focus on the many good times we’ve shared with her. She is in a better place now with her Lord and Savior.

Preceding her in death were her parents; Surviving are: her husband, Marshall Weathersby of Ahmeek; her child, Katherine Schreiber (Reilly and soon to be grandchild) of Laurium; her step children Jessica Weathersby, of Port Townsend, WA, Alex Weathersby (Elizabeth) of Bellingham, WA, and Sid Gifford (Scott) of Seattle, WA; her siblings, Sandy Athey (Doug) of Decatur, Carl Druskovich (Amy) of Decatur, Gary Druskovich (Nancy) of Vero Beach, Florida, and Dan Druskovich (Judy) of Traverse City; several nieces and nephews; many cousins and friends.

A celebration of life service for Sally will be held on Friday, May 23, 2025, at Grace United Methodist Church in Houghton. Visitation will be at 10am, service at 11am, followed by a luncheon at the church. The service will be live streamed on YouTube (https://www.YouTube.com/@hgumc) for anyone wishing to participate remotely.

Sally’s ashes will be interred at a later date in the Hamilton Township Cemetery close to the farm where she was raised and loved so much.
