James Reichert

MARQUETTE, MI-James (Jim) Reichert died peacefully with loved ones close by Monday evening, May 12, 2025 at the D.J. Jacobetti Home for Veterans in Marquette, Michigan.

Originally from Ypsilanti, Michigan, Jim made his home in his beloved Upper Peninsula for nearly forty years.

Though Jim valued an independent lifestyle, he thought of others before himself. Working in maintenance and as a truck driver at Goodwill was his favorite job, because they support those in need due to disabilities or financial hardships. A patient and kind man, he served as a mentor for his coworkers and advocated for them during challenging interactions. The experience helped with his outlook that ‘things could always be worse’ and he should never feel sorry for himself.

He carried these sentiments throughout his life and always did what he could to help those less fortunate. This dedication to service included donating to charities such as Meals on Wheels, Disabled American Veterans, Feeding America, Habitat for Humanity, Wounded Warriors, and St Jude Children’s Research Hospital.

Watching the freighters on Lake Superior was a favorite pastime, especially loading at the Marquette Ore Dock. He loved driving and found comfort and freedom on the road. An intelligent and an avid reader, he enjoyed sci-fi and books on the afterlife. In his youth, he enjoyed wood working and walking the trails.

Jim enlisted in the Army at 17, intending to serve with a friend in Vietnam. After time in Fort Knox and Valley Forge, he was honorably discharged for medical reasons in 1966.

Jim is preceded in death by his father James Merlin Reichert, his mother Minnie Edith (Yeager) Reichert, and his brother Merlin Lee Reichert.

He is survived by his former wife Louise Reichert, his two loving nieces Jennifer Reichert and Rachel Ortega (partner William Gross), grandniece Ariana, great-grand niece Amya, and family canine, Gus.

In lieu of flowers please consider a donation to one of Jim’s favorite charities: Meals on Wheels, St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, Disabled American Veterans or your favorite charity.
