James Boyer

CHOCOLAY TWP, MI-James D. Boyer, age 80, passed away on Saturday, May 3, 2025, due to an aggressive brain tumor (Glioblastoma).

Jim was born March 6, 1945 in Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan to Daniel and June (Thompson) Boyer. He grew up on Sugar Island where hunting and fishing were a large part of his life. Jim served his country for 6 years with the Michigan National Guard unit in Sault Ste. Marie. He was employed for 31 years with Michigan Bell Telephone Company, retiring in 1999. He was a lifetime member of the Telephone Pioneers serving as past president, a member of the American Legion Post #44, and a member of Marquette Hope Church (Skandia United Methodist). His hobbies included hunting, running his saw mill at camp and always enjoyed designing and fabricating items.

Jim leaves behind his wife of 57 years Beverly (VanLuven); three sons: Russell (Barb), Scott, and Steven; 7 grandchildren: Brenna (Randy) Trepanier, Jerry Boyer, Megan (Logan Wallace) Boyer, Annie (Otis) Malmgren, Shelby (Joe) O’Dovero, Rhys Boyer, and Dalton Boyer; 7 great-grandchildren and one more very soon; a sister Evelyne (Guy) Bumstead; sisters-in-law Jane Boyer, Viola (Ted) Walsh, and Elaine (Vaughn) Curtis; and brother-in-law Melvin (Cathy) VanLuven; along with numerous nieces and nephews. He also leaves behind three very special friends Dick Baldwin, Gary Baldwin and John Laitinen.

He was preceded in death by his parents, one brother (Marvin), his in-laws and four nephews.

The family will receive relatives and friends at Marquette Hope Church-Skandia Location, on Saturday, May 10, beginning at 10:00 am until the time of service at 12:00 noon. Rev. Christopher Hintz, pastor, will officiate. A reception will follow at the Skandia Community Center. Interment will be in the Park Cemetery, Marquette.
