Barbara Schmeltzer

MARQUETTE, MI-Barbara J. (Purton) Schmeltzer, devoted wife, mother, and grandmother, passed away peacefully on Friday, May 2, 2025, at the Michigan Veterans Homes DJ Jacobetti.
The daughter of Geoffrey F. Purton and Irene Barbara was born on April 17, 1932, in London, England.
In her 20s, Barbara set out on what she called her mission to find her ‘Yank’-a journey that led her to American serviceman LeRoy ‘Butch’ Schmeltzer. She followed him to the United States, arriving on Thanksgiving Day, unaware of the holiday’s traditions but full of hope for the future. Barbara and Butch were married at St. Peter’s Cathedral on December 22, 1956 and made their home in Marquette, Michigan. There, they built a life, raising three children and sharing 67 years of marriage.
A gifted cook, Barbara won several competitions over the years. She poured her heart into caring for her family and creating a home filled with love and delicious meals. Known for her quick wit and quiet humor, her one-liners brought joy and laughter to all who knew her.
In her later years, Barbara found joy in simply being a passenger. Whether on a long drive or a short ride, she took in the scenery and enjoyed the moment.
Barbara is survived by her sons, Dean (Pamela) Schmeltzer and Brian (Patty) Schmeltzer; her grandchildren, Randi (Ryan) Schmeltzer Skrzypczynski and Ryan (Deidre) Schmeltzer; and her great-grandchildren, Cole Skrzypczynski and Ivy & Penny Schmeltzer. She is also survived by her brother-in-law Gary (Carol) Schmeltzer and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Butch, their son, Dale Schmeltzer.
The family would like to extend their heartfelt gratitude to the staff at Michigan Veterans Homes DJ Jacobetti and Lake Superior Hospice for the compassionate care and kindness shown to Barbara.
A private graveside service will be held at Park Cemetery.
