Beverly Salvate

GWINN, MI – Beverly Ann Salvate, age 85, of Gwinn, passed away Wednesday evening, October 30, 2024, at home, in the loving, comforting care of her family.

Born on January 6, 1939, in Ishpeming, Michigan, the daughter of Lowell Roberts, Sr. and Betty (Wallin), Beverly’s life was a tapestry of love, resilience, and joy that she shared generously with all who knew her.

Raised in the close-knit community of Princeton and Gwinn, Beverly was a proud graduate of Gwinn High School in 1957. Beverly’s early life was marked by a spirit of adventure and a deep commitment to family. Shortly after graduation, she married Carl Aho Sr. in September 1957, and together they began a journey of love and family until Carl’s untimely passing in 1960. Beverly’s strength and grace shone brightly as she navigated life’s challenges, and in 1962, she found love again, marrying Robert Salvate on June 30th.

A pioneering entrepreneur, Beverly was one of the original owners of the Gwinn A & W Restaurant, notable for being the first A & W to offer indoor seating. Her business acumen and dedication to her community made the restaurant a beloved local gathering place and a symbol of Beverly’s innovative spirit.

Beverly’s interests were as diverse as they were passionate. She found joy in traveling the country, exploring new places, and creating memories. An avid bowler and softball player, she brought enthusiasm and a competitive edge to every game. Her love for music was evident in her younger years as she skillfully played the accordion, and her love for dance kept her twirling and stepping to the rhythm of life. In her free time she took great joy in volunteering for thousands of hours for many organizations including RSVP and Triad of Marquette County, as well as the VFW auxiliary in Gwinn. Crafting, crocheting, and knitting were more than hobbies for Beverly; they were expressions of her creativity and love. The intricate patterns and careful stitches were emblematic of the care she put into every aspect of her life. Her grandchildren were the recipients of her crafted masterpieces, each piece a warm embrace from their beloved grandmother.

Beverly’s legacy is one of resilience and strength. She was a formidable presence, never shying away from challenges and always standing firm in her convictions. Her three sons knew her as a tough, no-nonsense mother who guided them with a steady hand and a loving heart.

Her family was her pride and joy, and she leaves behind a legacy of love and laughter.

Beverly is survived by her three devoted children, Carl (Peggy) Aho and Robert Aho, both of Gwinn, and John (Christina) Salvate of Mesa, AZ. Her ten grandchildren, Carl Aho III, Beverly Aho, Christopher Aho, Lisa Lowry, Robert Aho, William Aho, Michelle Aho, Donald Aho, Britany Ingham, and Amberly Petty, as well as her 26 great-grandchildren and five great-great-grandchildren, will carry forward her spirit and zest for life. She is also survived by her sisters, Judith Krejcar of Perry, FL, and Linda Gerberding of Gwinn, MI, along with several nieces and nephews, all of whom will miss her dearly.

Beverly was preceded in death by her parents, her brother, Lowell Jr., and both of her beloved husbands. Her passing leaves a void in the hearts of those who loved her, but her indomitable spirit and the memories she created will continue to inspire and comfort her family and friends.

Beverly Ann Salvate lived a life full of purpose, love, and joy. Her story is one of triumph over adversity, unwavering love for her family, and a legacy that will be cherished for generations to come.
