Harry Rajala

MARQUETTE, MI – Harry A. Rajala, age 90, peacefully entered eternal life on Monday, October 28, 2024, at Brookridge Heights Assisted Living Facility, surrounded by the love and care of his family.
Harry was born in Gladstone, Michigan, to Henry and Doris (Smith) Rajala. After graduating with the Gladstone High School class of 1951, Harry pursued his passion for education at Northern Michigan University, earning a bachelor’s degree in education. Soon after, he married his beloved Arlene on June 16, 1956. Harry then dutifully served his country in the U.S. Army, and following an honorable discharge, he returned to Marquette, where he embarked on a distinguished career at Northern Michigan University. His dedication spanned several departments, and he ultimately retired at the remarkable age of 85. Harry also earned his master’s degree in education while working at NMU.
A devoted NMU athletics supporter, Harry could often be found cheering on the teams he loved. As a young man, he played on NMU’s golf team, and his lifelong love for sports included a deep passion for golf, tennis, and bowling. A true Green Bay Packers fan, Harry embraced the team with unwavering loyalty.
A member of Messiah Lutheran Church and the Marquette Golf Club, Harry will be remembered for his generosity and kindness. His legacy of giving extended beyond his family and friends to the many lives he touched in his community.
Harry is survived by his three children, Peggy (Jim Eckardt) Dewitt of Marquette, Brian (Denise) Rajala of Waukesha, WI, and Janice (Gary) Johnstone of Negaunee Township. He was a cherished grandfather to eleven grandchildren–Michelle (Rodney) Parkkonen, Sara (Craig) Drummond, Kathy Dewitt, Joshua (Stephanie) Rajala, Andrew (Megan) Coombs, Megan (Cory) Schober, Betsy (Quinn) Rajala, Kylie (Giuseppe) Cortese, Brandi Rajala, Keith (Lindsay) Johnstone, and Kirsten (Endish) Tedla–and a great-grandfather to twelve great-grandchildren.
