Frederick Herman

ISHPEMING, MI- Frederick Joseph Herman, 93, longtime Ishpeming resident, passed away peacefully early Saturday morning, October 19, 2024 at Trillium Hospice House, Marquette, under the care of his loving family and UP Home Health & Hospice.

Fred was born October 28, 1930 in Ishpeming to John and Mary (Liquia) Herman, and graduated from St. Paul High School, Class of 1949, where he excelled in basketball. After his schooling, he served in the United States Marine Corps during the Korean War era, being honorably discharged in 1953. Following his service to his country, he began his career with CCI, primarily in maintenance, and retired in 1982 with over 32 years of service with the company. Post retirement he also worked part time for Spear & Sons in Marquette.

Mr. Herman was a member of St. Paul Catholic Church, Negaunee, and was also a member of the Knights of Columbus. In his spare time, he enjoyed playing pinochle and cribbage, being at the family camp on Crooked Lake, and was an avid fan of the Green Bay Packers. In his younger years, he actively played in the local men’s softball and basketball leagues. Fred and his beloved wife, Doris enjoyed wintering in Clearwater, FL, where they played shuffleboard. Above all, he adored his grandchildren, and following them in all their extracurricular activities.

Surviving are his daughter, Susan (Clyde) Nyman of Ishpeming; a son, Steven (Julie) Herman of Negaunee; his grandchildren: Chelsea (Chris) Ullmer, Kathy (Brad) Gischia, Jesse (Rio Zoch) Herman, Jake (Kerri Spencer) Foster, Adam Foster, Rory (Christina) Herman, Cailey (Shawn) Kerry, and Andrew Herman; 19 great-grandchildren; daughter-in-law, Sookkyung Herman of Plano, TX; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his beloved wife, Doris Herman in 2019; his son, Bryan Herman; infant granddaughter, Sarah Jeanne; nine brothers: Joseph, John, Albert, Edward, William, Leo, Lawrence, Peter, Louis; and his five sisters: Loretta, Mary, Eva, Elizabeth, Dorothy.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 12:00 Noon on Monday, October 28th, at St. Paul Catholic Church, Negaunee, with Rev. Larry Van Damme officiating. The family will greet friends and family from 10:00 AM until the start of Mass at noon at the church on Monday, and also at a luncheon immediately following services in the St. Paul School gymnasium.
