David Johnston
MARQUETTE, MI — David S. Johnston, our wonderful husband, father, and brother, passed away Wednesday, October 2nd, at the age of 72.
He was born June 28th, 1952, in Buffalo, New York, to Theresa Williams-Johnston- Spoon and Elbert Johnston. He served his country in the Army as a Military Police Officer stationed in Germany before leading an accomplished career with the Michigan State Police as a trooper, forensic investigator, and bomb squad officer. After 31 years of service, he retired from the Michigan State Police as a detective sergeant. Shortly after, he began working for the Department of Homeland Security as their Explosives Specialist; retirement just didn’t suit him. He was a man of high integrity, devotion, and faithfulness to God.
David’s love for his family was boundless. He is survived by his wife, Emma Johnston, who was his rock and his love. Their three children, Amber Johnston (Libby Nelson), Jeremy Johnston, and Ashley Johnston, were the pride and joy of his life. His siblings, Brenda Richards (Bob Routley) and Michael Johnston (Marianne Johnston), were his lifelong friends. He is further survived by his nieces and nephews, Jessica Bloomer, Cole Richards, Alissa Johnston, Ryan Johnston, and Alex Johnston, who held a special place in his heart.
The family will greet relatives and friends on Friday, October 11, 2024 at Canale-Tonella Funeral Home in Marquette from 12pm until 2pm, where the Michigan State Police will provide an honor guard. A service will start at 2pm in the funeral home and the family is welcoming anyone to share a memory or speak about David during this time. The U.S. Army and American Legion Post 44 will provide military honors.
